GROWING YOUR BUSINESS

One of the things that most, if not all, businesses have in common is a desire to grow and expand. After all, if we are not growing, not moving forward, then we are going backwards; staying still is simply not an option. Here are 5 simple yet effective tips for growing any business: –

  1. Know Your Market – Look for the opportunities, the niches, and those areas where other providers are falling short. Continually scan the environment, record your observations and your thoughts and build up a picture. You will begin to ‘see’ trends and opportunities right in front of you; then be first to react.
  2. An old Chinese proverb says: ‘Remember your strengths for your weaknesses will always be with you’. None of us are perfect, so we will always have weaknesses to work on, but it is our strengths that give us competitive advantage. Build on these so that people will say you’re simply the best at what you do.
  3. Get Around and Meet People – Don’t just think of networking as meeting people to try to get sales and make contacts. There is a huge amount to learn from other people in how they work. You see good ideas, borrow them, adapt them and make them work for you.
  4. Don’t think you have to have all the Right Answers – All small business owners have limited resources – after all there is only one of you! When you need to make an important, right decision, seek the best advice and pay for it if you have to. Good decisions always pay off in the long run.
  5. Take a Punt – A calculated gamble, an experiment, limiting cost and risk and see what happens. Punts often work, and even when they don’t they is usually much to learn and other opportunities will be discovered in the process.
